1. VERY FEW PEOPLE KNOW THAT I… am quite an accomplished shower singer.

2. WHEN I’M NOT ON TOUR I… am working on the next project to go on tour.

3. WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT MY ART IS… that my work is my play, and my play is my work.

4. A LIFE LESSON I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH CENTRE COLLEGE STUDENTS IS: that success is a journey and not a destination.

5. I DEFINE ART AS: a way to connect with spirit, a way to learn about each other, and a way to transform and change.

6. MY MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN SHOW BUSINESS THUS FAR WAS: the overwhelming stage fright I experienced before my debut in front of a packed house in “Stomp,” nineteen years ago.

7. THE PERSONS WHO MOST INFLUENCED ME ARE: Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane. Bill taught me about the power of outrageousness  and the political nature of all art. Arnie taught me a love for art history, formalism, photography, and the power of stillness.

9. WHILE TOURING, ONE OF MY GUILTY PLEASURES IS: cheeseburger deluxes, apple pie a la mode, and massages.

10. IF I COULD ENSURE THAT THE AUDIENCE TAKES HOME ONE THING AFTER MY PERFORMANCE, IT WOULD BE: that art has many jobs: it connects us, tells us who we are, holds a mirror up so we see our own selves reflected, asks questions and gets us talking.

More about the artist:
Known for his wit, intelligence, ingenuity and uncanny physical humor, Seán Curran successfully blends a myriad of influences into a purely original style.

In fall 2012, Curran will embark upon a new collaboration with The King’s Singers, one of the world’s most celebrated vocal ensembles. Travel Songs (working title) is a collaborative work-in-development that will serve as the centerpiece of a touring program of repertory by both companies. The project will include music from acclaimed composer Joby Talbot, to be sung by the six members of The King’s Singers, while the six dancers of Seán Curran Company will articulate Curran’s physical and conceptual exploration of landscape, horizon, and time. This collaborative program presents a wealth of opportunities for classes in dance and vocal techniques, post-performance Q&A’s, and “Meet the Artist” events. For this new project the creative team will include: Mark Randall of World Studio, lighting designer Joe Doran, and costume designer Christina Bullard.

Since its formation, the Seán Curran Company has been commissioned for new works and presented by The Joyce Theater, The New Victory Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church, Symphony Space, the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Project, Central Park Summerstage and Celebrate Brooklyn. In spring 2012, the company brought its work to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, and Turkmenistan as part of the U.S. Department of State’s DanceMotion USA initiative.

The company has been recognized for its artistic excellence with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, the National Dance Project, Arts International’s Fund for US Artists, the Harkness Foundations for Dance, the Greenwall Foundation, Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, The Jerome Foundation and the Altria Group, Inc.

In addition to his work for Seán Curran Company, Seán continues to work with opera and theater companies in both choreographic and directorial capacities whenever possible.

The King’s Singers + Seán Curran Company will perform Travel Songs at the Norton Center on Friday, November 16, 2012.  Click here for tickets and more information.
