On Christmas Day in 1809, history was made in Danville, KY. That’s when Dr. Ephraim McDowell performed what he called “an experiment” to remove a large ovarian tumor from Jane Todd Crawford, who had ridden 60 miles by horseback for the surgery. That experiment turned out to be the world’s first-ever successful surgery to remove an ovarian tumor, earning Dr. McDowell the legacy as “the father of abdominal surgery.” Now, more than 200 years later, the name of Dr. Ephraim McDowell lives on.
“It’s very fitting for Ephraim McDowell Health to carry on the legacy of this pioneering surgeon by attaching his name to the services we provide,” said Vicki A. Darnell, president and chief executive officer. “Dr. McDowell was an innovative physician whose accomplishment became known around the world and changed the practice of surgery. We want to build on that legacy by being a health care leader and providing innovative services to improve the health status of the communities we serve.”
Most recently named one of the 100 Great Community Hospitals in America by the prestigious Becker’s Hospital Review, Ephraim McDowell Health garners national recognition by investing in the most advanced health care technology, recruiting specialty physicians to practice in our area, and offering the services that our patients need. That dedication to quality earned Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center status as a Center of Excellence for total hip and knee replacement, and spine surgery. EMRMC is the only hospital in Kentucky to achieve this status bestowed by The Joint Commission, and as a leader in orthopedic care has worked with hospitals in Kentucky’s biggest cities to help them improve their orthopedic surgical and post-operative care.
As one of only four Trauma Centers in Kentucky, Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center stands ready with a highly regarded trauma team with the critical skills necessary to save lives when catastrophic injuries occur.
In recent years, Ephraim McDowell Health has invested in resources to enhance the cardiac care services available to individuals in the communities we serve, including the state’s most advanced cardiac catheterization lab. In 2005, Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center was one of only two hospitals in Kentucky to be approved for a certificate of need to perform primary angioplasty without an open heart program. Because of the success of that pilot program, hospitals across the state can now perform angioplasty, saving lives and making a difference in the cardiac health of patients.
Ephraim McDowell Health opened the Ephraim McDowell Heart & Vascular Institute in 2013. It is staffed by five board-certified cardiologists and a board-eligible vascular surgeon who provide great cardiac care and vascular care to patients. If you have any doubt about the cardiac care services we provide, just ask Ronnie Melton, owner of Melton’s Deli. He will quickly tell you that Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center saved his life and got him back to the family business after he suffered a heart attack.
Ephraim McDowell Health is also enhancing stroke care in the communities we serve with the addition of a board-certified neurologist and stroke screenings that are provided at community health fairs. In addition, the Ephraim McDowell Commonwealth Cancer Center is one of the region’s finest cancer diagnostic and treatment facilities, offering a comforting environment for chemotherapy or radiation treatments provided by the excellent physicians and professional medical staff at the facility.
A commitment to quality care is not done for awards, but for the benefit of the patients who turn to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. However, honors such as the Kentucky Hospital Association Quality Award and the Women’s Choice Award for Best Hospital for Patient Experience in Emergency Care validate that patients are the top priority. We believe that Dr. McDowell would be proud of the quality and innovative care provided by the health system that carries his name.
