When Danville resident Betty McGuire went for her annual mammogram in April, she felt like she was walking into The Greenbrier, a luxurious resort in West Virginia, for a spa treatment or massage.

“I was very impressed,” McGuire said of her experience at The Ephraim McDowell Women’s Breast & Health Center, located on the second floor of the Ephraim McDowell Diagnostic Center at 101 Daniel Drive in Danville.

The Women’s Breast & Health Center opened in mid-April and comprises the entire second floor of the Diagnostic Center.  From the moment a patient steps off the elevator or takes the last step to the second floor, she is immersed in a spa-like environment.  Also unique to this new service is that it offers same-day readings of screening mammograms … the only facility in central Kentucky to do so.

Patricia Hill, manager of the facility, notes that offering same-day readings of mammograms has long been a dream for Ephraim McDowell’s mammography staff.  Previously, she noted, patients were waiting up to several days to get the results from their mammogram.  Hill said once the staff developed the process that could be followed to provide same-day mammography readings, the idea for the spa-like environment followed … to keep the patients at ease during the 10- to 15-minute wait for their mammography results.

McGuire noted that she was provided with a heated terry cloth robe to wear while waiting in a tranquility room for the results of her mammogram.  Complimentary coffee, tea and water were available for her to enjoy while she waited in a plush chair with a foot rest.  Soft music filled the air, which was infused with aromatherapy.

“I felt like I was at a spa,” recalls McGuire.  “It was not a painful experience at all.”

Hill notes that patients who have had a mammogram at the new Women’s Breast & Health Center have offered positive remarks about the service provided as well as the spa-like environment.

“What they really like is getting that report,” she said.  “For some women who have a history of breast cancer in the family, or their mother died at 35 from breast cancer, this is a traumatic experience and they want to know about their mammogram without waiting.”

The Women’s Breast & Health Center uses state-of-the-art 3D Tomosynthesis mammography equipment with readings provided by board-certified radiologists on-site.  Bone density analysis and ultrasound procedures of the breast, abdomen, pelvis or thyroid are also offered at the newly-renovated Women’s Breast & Health Center.
