Tens of thousands of people in central Kentucky depend on Ephraim McDowell for their health care needs as well as the dozens of other services we offer to improve an individual’s health and lifestyle. It’s no wonder, then, that our health care system is a frequent winner of the Quality Award presented annually by the Kentucky Hospital Association, or that we are recognized as one of the nation’s Top 100 community hospitals, or that we hold highly-respected Gold Seals of Excellence from The Joint Commission for orthopedic and spine care.
Our health care system is committed to providing the communities we serve with the highest level of health care that can be found in the commonwealth. Our namesake, Dr. Ephraim McDowell, was an innovator in medical care when – on Christmas Day in 1809, from his home here in Danville, KY – he performed the world’s first-ever successful surgery to remove an ovarian tumor. We strive to continue that legacy and have established ourselves as pioneers for using advanced technology and providing innovative services to improve the health status of the communities we serve.
Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center was the first hospital in Kentucky to provide lung disease diagnosis and treatment through molecular testing using the less invasive Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy. The technology allows our pulmonologists to obtain a larger sample of a tumor than was typical with prior biopsy procedures and it aids in earlier diagnosis and thus the development of treatment plans to improve patient outcomes.
Our cardiologists were the first in Kentucky to use new technology for treating Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), and the Regional Medical Center was only the third hospital in the nation to acquire and use the Pantheris lumivascular atherectomy system for treating PAD. Through the Ephraim McDowell Heart & Vascular Institute, residents of central Kentucky have access to five board-certified cardiologists who provide expert cardiac and arterial care using medical technology available in the most advanced cardiac catheterization lab in the commonwealth.
Our quest for excellence continues in the other service lines we offer to those we serve. Ephraim McDowell Commonwealth Cancer Center earned accreditation by the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a program of the American College of Surgeons that recognizes cancer care programs for their commitment to providing comprehensive, high-quality and multi-disciplinary patient-centered care. This accreditation is proof that our patients are receiving the standard of care and standard treatment that will be offered at a larger hospital, and it ensures that the Cancer Center will stay current with new medicines, new changes in standards of care and new treatments. That should ease the minds of our patients who find themselves fighting this feared disease.
Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center now offers the most advanced surgical device available, the da Vinci Surgical Robot. This technology greatly benefits our patients, as it means less blood loss, less need for pain medication and a shorter hospital stay. It also benefits surgeons by providing enhanced vision of the surgical area as well as affording enhanced precision and control of the system’s instruments.
While the Regional Medical Center is the flagship institution of our health care system, Ephraim McDowell Health now boasts three hospitals … the other two are Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford and Ephraim McDowell James B. Haggin Hospital in Harrodsburg. Those two facilities are 25-bed critical access hospitals, and the Emergency Departments at all three of our hospitals are certified Trauma Centers.
Besides the three hospitals, Ephraim McDowell Health is visible in each of the counties in our six-county service area, with services ranging from family medical centers that offer primary care physicians and advanced practice providers, to durable medical equipment stores, to outpatient rehabilitation services including physical, occupational and speech therapies. Most recently we expanded the services of McDowell Wellness Center, a family-oriented health and wellness facility, by opening a satellite location in Harrodsburg.
No matter the service offered, our commitment is to provide quality and innovative care. We believe our people go above and beyond in delivering that care in a personal and compassionate manner.
