Sodexo-Centre Dining Services continues to help end hunger in Boyle County
Over the past 11 years, Sodexo-Centre College Dining Services has sponsored many events on Centre’s campus and donated thousands of meals to the Danville community. Yearly, the dining team presents two events to enlighten the Centre community about hunger issues that exist in Danville and Boyle County.
In September of each year, Share our Strength – No Kid Hungry partners with Sodexo-Centre College Dining Services with the goal of raising awareness about childhood hunger in their community. Through culinary events, soliciting donations, social media, and informational displays, Sodexo has been able to donate almost 4,100 meals to local charities in Boyle County.
In April and May, the dining services team holds their annual Servathon. Employees donate time by volunteering at local shelters and pantries, giving money from payroll deductions, and hosting campus-wide canned food drives in Cowan Dining Hall. Close to 7,300 meals have been donated or funded over the past years.
Beginning in 2016, Sodexo has added another community partner — Families First. Families First is a service of the Danville Schools Family Resource Center. They offer many services and programs that include in-school mentoring assistance, health services or health service referrals, and parenting education programs. Sodexo is currently working with the organization to assist with their Backpack Program. The Backpack Program provides nutritious and easy-to-prepare foods for K-12 students who are experiencing food insecurity. The backpacks are put together with the contributions from local food banks, churches, and volunteers. The intention is to supply enough food for a student to eat through the weekend.
“To get involved with this program felt like a natural fit for our dining team,” says Mike Nagorka, general manager of Sodexo-Centre College Dining Services. “When students don’t have to worry about a basic need like food, they can put their energy into what is important – being successful at learning and studying.”
In addition to volunteering for the Backpack Program, Nagorka and the dining team received a third $1,000 grant from the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation. The foundation is a not-for-profit organization, created with the mission to ensure that every child in the United States grows up with dependable access to nutritious food, enabling them to lead a healthy, productive life. “The grant will be a helpful financial addition to help fund this important program,” says Nagorka.
Sodexo invites the entire Danville community to visit them in any of the dining facilities on the Centre Campus. If you happen to come in September, April, or May, Sodexo encourages you to help the community by making a donation to one of their hunger initiatives.
