Norton Center for the Arts

Press Release

Jan. 9, 2020 – The first month of a new decade is sure to excite at Centre College’s Norton Center for the Arts.

Blues, ballet and tap are on deck for central Kentucky’s premier performing arts venue, as well as an art exhibition by one of central Kentucky’s finest.

“We’ve got an international focus coming this month,” said Norton Center executive director Steve Hoffman. “Canada-by-way-of-Switzerland, China and Australia are each represented, adding Kentucky to their worldwide performances.”

Shakura S’Aida will kick things off on Jan. 17: The Brooklyn-born, Switzerland-raised and Canadian-based singer is most known for her scorching vocal style and powerful, original blues music. Part of the Norton Center TasteMAKER Series, she’ll perform on the Weisiger Theatre stage with special guest artist, Chuck Campbell, a steel pedal guitarist known for his role in the award-winning gospel blues group, The Campbell Brothers.

After Shakura’s soulful performance, a separate TasteMAKER Social event continues in another exclusive, exciting Norton Center location with food and drink. Tickets to the Social are very limited.

Shanghai Ballet, one of the world’s predominant traditional ballet companies, will bring its performance of “The Butterfly Lovers” on Jan. 26. The story is considered to be the Chinese equivalent to “Romeo and Juliet” and features elegant choreography, graceful dancers, magnificent costumes, and a touching story of love and loss.

The Tap Pack rounds out performances coming in the next month. The Australian-based tap group sings, dances, and jokes in a slick mix of humorous high-energy entertainment. The event, sponsored by Toyota on Nicholasville, will showcase songs from Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. to Bublé and Beyoncé.

These international performances are more accessible than ever, with ticket prices starting at $15 for Shakura’s performance. Shanghai Ballet and The Tap Pack each have tickets starting at $35.

With a visit to the Norton Center, you’re also encouraged to view the latest art exhibit from Centre College’s Stodghill Professor of Art, Sheldon Tapley.

“Sheldon Tapley: Painter and Draftsman” will be on display through May 31 at the Norton Center. The exhibit includes a sampling of Tapley’s major works from early in his illustrious 30-year career, as well as new and exciting recent works.

The exhibit will be on display for the remainder of the 2019-2020 Season. For exhibit tours, show information and the most up-to-date ticket prices, visit, contact the Norton Center Box Office at 859-236-4692 or call toll free at 877-HIT-SHOW (877-448-7469).
