Japanese Winter Plum Festival

The Norton Center and Centre College will host a Japanese Winter Plum Festival to explore the rich culture of the “Land of the Rising Sun.”  The evening event will include demonstrations in Japanese tea tasting, calligraphy, Sake tasting and more.  The highlight of the Festival is a sampling of traditional Japanese Sagi-ryu Kyogen Theatre.  These short plays originated in the 14th Century and represent humorous fables involving lively townspeople.  In partnership with Yamaguchi Prefectural University, the actors and many of the Festival demonstrators are coming to the Norton Center directly from Yamaguchi, Japan, exclusively for this very special event.  The ticket price includes admission to the Festival and unlimited viewings of the Kyogen Theatre performances (rotated hourly).

Jeremy Kittel is one of the foremost instrumentalists among a new breed of fiddlers and violinists who easily navigate a multitude of musical styles and traditions, while cultivating new ground and redefining the role of the instrument. With the drive of Celtic fiddling, spontaneity of jazz, soul of the blues and intricacies of chamber music, Jeremy Kittel and his band consistently captivate audiences. Joining him are some of the most dynamic young performers on the American acoustic music scene, whose musical roots transverse the world – the four-piece band usually includes the unique musical instrument pairing of violin, mandolin, cello and hammered dulcimer.    Still in his 20’s, Kittel has already made a name for himself amongst the artists with whom he has worked, and the venues in which he has performed, including serving as a member of the Turtle Island Quartet for five years, working with My Morning Jacket and Abigail Washburn, and performing at Bonnaroo and Telluride Bluegrass Festivals.

The recipient of a 2014 Bessie Award, Jessica Lang Dance seamlessly incorporated striking design elements and transforms classical ballet language into artfully crafted, emotionally engaging contemporary works.

Jim Belushi & the Board of Comedy

An alumnus of Saturday Night Live and Chicago’s famed Second City, Jim Belushi brings to the stage an improvised comedy sketch show featuring his Board of Comedy members Larry Joe Campbell, Josh Funk, Megan Grano, and Brad Morris. After his two-year stint on SNL, Jim appeared in over 75 movies, including Red Heat, About Last Night, The Principal, and K-9, and five television series, including eight years on According to Jim and, most recently, CBS’s The Defenders. In 2011, Jim gained rave reviews on Broadway as Harry Brock in Born Yesterday. However, drama and comedy are not Jim’s only talents; for the past fifteen years, he has been singing, dancing, and playing harmonica in the Blues Brothers with Dan Aykroyd and with his own band, The Sacred Hearts. Jim returns to his improv roots this fall on the Newlin Hall stage with an incredibly talented and hilarious group of actors.

Johnny Rivers

In 1964, when the British Invasion was in progress and American rockers were tough to find on the U.S. pop charts, Johnny Rivers was one of the first to regain a foothold; his first Top 10 record came right in the midst of Beatlemania. His formula was much the same as the British style vintage American rock n’ roll and R&B played with a verve and simplicity that gave his music a contemporary edge. Over the next four years his funky, go-go rock gave him a steady stream of Top 10 records. His first #1 record came when, against the advice of the record company, he abruptly switched gears and began cutting ballads.

The guitar duo of Julian Lage and Chris Eldridge is a collaborative effort founded in the roots of acoustic music, exploring the worlds of improvisation and composition. With Lage’s background in traditional Jazz and new guitar music, and Eldridge’s deep relationship with Bluegrass and Americana as well as his being a member of the widely acclaimed and Grammy® nominated band Punch Brothers, this duo lives at the nexus of improvisation, spontaneous composition, and virtuosic refinement, all performed on their respective 1939 Martin guitars.
