First making his mark with Steely Dan, McDonald then began his long run with the Doobie Brothers, singing lead on signature songs such as “What a Fool Believes,” which won the Grammy for Song of the Year and “Minute by Minute,” which carried away Record of the Year. As a solo artist, McDonald’s husky, passionate voice has put its imprint on a steady stream of memorable songs, including his mega-hit version of the Motown favorite “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough.” Michael McDonald remains an enduring presence in popular music.
