A RETRO PERSPECTIVE: REVISITING PRINTS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION

NOW OPEN!

In 1973, the Norton Center celebrated its grand opening with an exhibition of works loaned by the Guggenheim Museum. Many of the artists who were featured are now considered pioneers of Modern Art — artists including Andy Warhol, Karel Appel and Adolph Gottlieb. The exhibition inspired Centre College to actively collect graphic prints by these artists and their contemporaries. To celebrate the Norton Center’s 50th anniversary, selections from this special collection will be exhibited throughout the season.

In 1985, France's leading orchestra, the renowned Orchestre de Paris, performed at only four stops in the United States: New York City, Chicago, Washington D.C. and right here in Danville, Kentucky.

The Norton Center Grand Foyer was packed shoulder to shoulder as patrons came pouring in for a "cultural smorgasbord" of art and entertainment, as the Orchestra's performance coincided with the grand opening of the Alexander Archipenko Retrospective.

Following the roaring standing ovation at the end of the night, Donald Karshan, the private collector who loaned the works for the exhibition, remarked: "It was a totally unjaded audience, different than in the big cities. It's almost like a mirage, but it's not. I'm just jealous there's nothing like this where I live."
