Thomas Mapfumo

Known as 'The Lion of Zimbabwe,' some fans say that outspoken musician Thomas Mapfumo is better known in Zimbabwe than the country's president. Few bandleaders in Africa, or anywhere, have been so consistently relevant to the lives of their people. By blending traditional African music with western instruments and a powerful political message, Mapfumo created an Afro-pop musical style known as chimurenga (the native word for struggle). The rhythmic and melodic appeal of Mapfumo's music is universal, and this is a concert you'll enjoy and remember for years to come.
