The Kirov Orchestra
The Kirov Orchestra is the resident orchestra of St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre, one of the most distinguished musical institutions in Russia. Founded in the 18th century, the Mariinsky has given the premiere performances of such works as Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, Borodin's Prince Igor, and Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, Nutcracker, and Sleeping Beauty. Artistic and general director of the Mariinsky Theatre, Maestro Valery Gergiev is also principal guest conductor of New York's Metropolitan Opera and principal conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. The Newlin Hall program will include the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Mikhail Simonyan as soloist and, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth, the Fourth Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich.
