“We Were Here”

This multi-media exhibition aims to help preserve and represent to the public the history of Danville and Boyle County’s African American community. Through a combination of archival photographs, oral history listening stations and physical artifacts, “We Were Here” foregrounds storytelling as an alternative means of preserving history. The exhibition highlights the individual and collective experience of African Americans living in Danville and Boyle County in the middle part of the 20th century when multiple urban renewal projects and school desegregation were changing the community forever.
This tour is part of the WE WERE HERE PROJECT, celebrating our community’s rich African American heritage and is sponsored by Farmers National Bank and WealthSouth.
