A winner of four All Ireland Titles at Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann\, Jamie has also been a member of the Comhaltas tour of Ireland and the UK. Graduating with a B.Sc. in Physiotherapy from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland\, Jamie has now chosen to pursue a career in music. Along with being a member of JigJam\, he has toured worldwide with various groups such as Celtic Legends. Jamie is well known for his rhythmic guitar playing\, vocal versatility and accomplished banjo solos. His influences include John Doyle\, Chris Thile and Gerry O’Connor. \n  \nDAITHI MELIA hails from Co. Offaly. He is a multi-instrumentalist who studied Contemporary Music Performance at the Ballyfermot College of Further Education. During this time he explored various styles and genres of music and honed his skill on the guitar and the 5-string banjo. He performed with many bands of various genres in popular venues throughout Ireland and has since toured around the world with several acts. Daithi is also a seasoned session musician\, featured on various artists’ records and has been highly involved in the arrangement and writing process of other singer-songwriter projects. He has created his own unique style of 5-string banjo playing\, forging the different stylistic approaches of traditional Irish and Bluegrass music together while also still adding his own contemporary influences along with jazz and blues. \n  \nGAVIN STRAPPE was born in South Tipperary and began playing the Tenor Banjo at the age of ten. It was at this stage that Gavin developed a huge passion for Irish music and also began to play Mandolin and Tenor Guitar. This resulted in Gavin enjoying much success at Fleadh Cheol competitions\, winning numerous competitions at county\, provincial and All-Ireland levels. At the age of eighteen\, he became Senior All-Ireland champion on both Mandolin and Tenor Guitar. In 2009\, he commenced a Bachelor of Music degree at DIT National Conservatoire of Music and Drama\, graduating in 2013 with First-Class Honours in Music Performance. In 2014\, he completed his postgraduate studies at the University of Limerick and graduated with an honours degree in Music Education. Gavin has toured extensively around the world with numerous bands and ensembles\, including shows such as Brú Ború and Celtic Legends as well as headlining numerous North American festivals with JigJam. \n  \nSt. Louis native KEVIN BUCKLEY is a product of the city’s thriving Irish-American community. Raised playing Irish Traditional fiddle music alongside his father Jack on the uilleann pipes\, Buckley toured and competed nationally and internationally with St. Louis Irish Arts CCE\, earning a few titles along the way.  In addition to a years-long residency at John D. Since then\, the group has embraced repertoire for all ages and stages of life: from folk to classical to jazz to pop; all executed with the same fearlessness\, immense technical skill\, and typical Viennese “schmäh” (almost impossible to find an English translation\, but best rendered as a kind of sarcastic charm!).   \nIn their time away from touring\, Mnozil Brass has recorded 8 albums and 6 DVDs. By the time he turned the tender age of 17\, he was already playing at the Vienna State Opera. However\, his love of jazz was stronger\, and led him to become one of the most versatile trumpeters in Austria\, one who can play jazz\, classical\, crossover and everything in between. He is a whirlwind on stage and can tell a good joke or two\, as well. When he has time off\, he composes for Mnozil Brass.  \n  \n  \n  \nRobert Rother | Like Thomas\, Robert also hails from Melk an der Donau. As children\, the two of them played in a brass band conducted by Thomas’s very strict father. Polkas\, waltzes\, and marches were always on the program – a good learning experience\, it seems! Now\, Robert can engender a tone with so much longing and feeling that it is guaranteed to bring anyone to tears. Unlike Thomas\, Robert hardly moves on stage at all and lets the music speak for itself.  \n  \n  \n  \nRoman Rindberger | Roman was born into a musical family and played folk music as a youngster with his father and two brothers. His father Hans\, in turn\, would meet up with Gerhard Füßl’s father Franz because the families lived nearby. Roman loves technical passages and renders them with the precision of a Swiss clockmaker. And he even knows how the instruments work! If anyone wants to know more about brass music\, Roman is the man for you. On stage\, his character is the Latin Lover. \n  \n  \n  \nLeonhard Paul | Leonhard was born in Mödling near Vienna and is the first musician his family has ever produced. (Though there was a grandfather who earned his money as a painter and whose pictures hang in every other house in the better parts of Vienna!) Recently\, the other members of the band have started to get a little concerned about him because he seems to have taken a liking to shady characters on stage. Everyone wants to play the hero\, but Leonhard likes roles that show the darker side of man. No one knows exactly what’s going on in his head!  \n  \n  \n  \nGerhard Füßl | Gerhard grew up near where Roman lived\, and also had a father who taught him a lot about brass music. He is the most well-liked in the group. Probably because he looks after the financial matters. Everyone tries to keep on his good side\, and no one wants to incur his wrath. For his part\, he is usually friendly to all.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nZoltan Kiss | Austrian folk music was certainly not part of Zoltan’s upbringing. He was born in Budapest\, spent some time in Poland\, and finally settled in Vienna\, where he plays trombone in four languages. One of the group’s favorite games is to put some really difficult music in front of him and see if he can play it. He usually can! His technical skills take your breath away. Bets have been placed as to when and how something will be written that he can not master\, but\, so far\, high\, low\, slow\, fast\, he can play it all!  \n  \n  \n  \nWilfried Brandstötter | He started his stellar career playing the recorder\, subsequently joining the boys’ choir. After that\, it was the violin\, followed by the trumpet\, before finally feeling comfortable and at ease with the tuba. So\, speed is not quite his business. To him\, life is a slow and wide river. His ambition consists of making all concert halls\, including the audience seated herein\, feel the pleasant vibrations he’s producing with the help of low tones from his tuba. And the many crossings-out\, careful corrections and fragments of quartet movements from this period of Mozart’s life bear this out. Nowhere else did he labor so painstakingly over his music. “Please\, then\, receive them kindly and be to them as a father\, a guide\, a friend\,” Mozart (a generation younger than Haydn) continues. “I entreat you to be indulgent to those faults that may have escaped a father’s partial eye\, and\, in spite of them\, to continue your generous friendship towards one who so highly appreciates it.” \nThe magnificent and disturbing C major Quartet is the crowning point of Mozart’s six ‘Haydn’ quartets. The work is true evidence of Mozart’s triumph in emulating Haydn in his Op. 33 collection of quartets from 1782\, and achieving a balance of structure\, musical style and emotion. Mozart began work on the six quartets not long after moving from Salzburg to Vienna. It was then that he began to hear music by Bach and Handel on a regular basis at weekly gatherings in the Vienna home of Baron van Swieten. The power of contrapuntal writing began to have a deep and increasing effect on Mozart’s own part-writing at the time. The effect is at its most acute in the unsettling dissonances of the opening 22 measures of the C major Quartet. They give the work a nickname (‘Dissonance’) and arise from a synthesis of free counterpoint and chromatic\, ‘highly spiced’ harmonies\, to use a term that was often thrown at the mature Mozart. The dissonances are calculated to shock – so much so that people at first accused Mozart of releasing the printed music without having carefully proofed the parts! Even half a century later\, Belgian music theorist François-Joseph Fétis proposed a ‘fix’ to Mozart’s strident harmonies by moving the first violin entry one beat earlier. Many applauded the idea; few went along with it. Today were the opening to be played with this crass insensitivity to Mozart’s boldness\, it’s certain that the stone statue of the Don Giovanni Commendatore would appear on stage to sort things out. The suspense and tension created by the dissonance is released in the ensuing Allegro. The profound\, aching Andante cantabile is one of the most sublime movements Mozart wrote. Throughout the chromatic minuet and serene finale\, the musical invention and disciplined working-out of short motifs are exemplary. \n–Note by Keith Horner \n  \nBILLY CHILDS (b. 1957)\nString Quartet No. 3 “Unrequited” \nUnrequited\, String Quartet #3\, was conceived as a commentary on the story of Intimate Letters: String Quartet #2\, by Leos Janácek. The first thing – the only thing\, really – that popped into my mind was the tragedy of unrequited love (hence the name\, Unrequited). When I first heard Janacek’s Intimate Letters performed live\, the emotion of the piece jumped out at me: the wild shifts of tempo\, the beautiful and plaintive melodies\, the stark dynamic contrasts. I wanted to illustrate my perspective on this strange relationship between Janácek and Kamila Stösslová\, by telling the story of a man who goes through different phases of emotion\, before finally coming to terms with the fact that his love for her is one-sided – it will never be returned the way he would like. I sought to compose Unrequited so that it moves\, like the five stages of grief\, through a variety emotions – from romantic\, pure love\, through paranoid\, obsessive\, neurotic possessiveness\, arriving finally at despondent acceptance. \nThis piece was commissioned by Madelyn\, Jerald\, and Lee Jackrel and is dedicated to and premiered by the Lyris Quartet. \n—Note by Billy Childs \n  \nLUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN\nBorn in Bonn\, Germany\, baptized December 17\, 1770; died in Vienna\, Austria\, March 26\, 1827\nString Quartet in E-flat major\, Op. 127 \nLudwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a decade into what critics call his late period when he composed his String Quartet No. 12 in E-flat Major\, Op. 127 (1825). It had been 15 years since he wrote his Quartet No. 11\, a work he deemed so radical that he didn’t want it performed. Money from a commission convinced him to revisit the genre\, setting off a late-life sequence of quartets even more iconoclastic. This quartet is perhaps the most lyrical of the set and\, coming off the composition of his great celebration of joy in the 9th Symphony\, the most exuberant. \nThe beginning maestoso chorale appears simple\, but it is incredibly ambitious\, offering the listener the most basic form of four-part writing that every student learns\, as if to say\, this quartet will contain everything. It is also an affirmation\, as is what follows. Beethoven\, though often considered the Classical to Romantic bridge\, wanted to reclaim his classically inclined aesthetic in this period. An oversimplified tenet for the Romantics is that content dictates form. For Beethoven\, form was a primary driver in the creation of his best writing. Commentary often focuses on the radicalism of the late quartets\, and of course they are radical\, but the paradox is that their originality emerges from Beethoven’s impulse toward conservatism\, a retreat from certain contemporary trends to expand and loosen formal constraints. In this quartet\, the retreat is toward Bach\, Handel\, and the baroque\, with an emphasis on contrapuntal writing and heightened clarity of form. \nThe quartet promptly gets on with the business of restless counterpoint. In the context of the maestoso\, each new theme sounds as if it has been gathered from a disassembled chorale and scattered across the Haydn-esque sonata allegro form. Typical of Beethoven’s late quartets\, shifts are abrupt and transitions are unceremonious\, creating moments of comprehensive disintegration and unease in preparation for resolution. \nThe second movement is a theme and variations\, a form Beethoven was somewhat obsessed with in his late period. The six variations\, unlike some of Beethoven’s related works from this period\, do not reach for higher and higher levels of virtuosity\, but simply and steadily unearth the inherent depth of one of the most beautiful melodies the composer ever wrote. \nThe buzzing scherzo contains the most intricate contrapuntal writing of the piece. It is a masterclass in anticipation and deception – just when a phrase feels that it is settling in\, it will stop abruptly\, or a unison shout will compel it to a new section. \nThe final movement does not reconvene themes from the previous movements as is often the case\, but introduces two fresh themes\, a flowing melody whose shape is reminiscent of the first theme of the piece\, and a joyous march that propels with its decisive articulation and wide open harmonic accompaniment. The great pleasure of this movement is its ending\, a contrasting coda in a shifted key and meter announced suddenly by a violin trill\, the same technique that brought the quartet out of the maestoso at the start. Over the course of two critically-acclaimed studio albums\, hundreds of live shows\, and annual performances of the Allman Betts Family Revival\, The Allman Betts Band has established its own legacy of music and brotherhood. \nDevon and Duane first met as children in 1989\, when their fathers — keyboardist Gregg Allman and guitarist Dickey Betts\, both co-founders of The Allman Brothers Band — brought their boys on tour for the group’s 20th anniversary tour. “When you grow up on tour like that\, it connects you at a young age\,” Duane says. “From that point on\, we knew we were family. Even though we never lived in the same city\, we always had that bond.” \nIn late 2017\, Devon and Duane found themselves onstage at the Fillmore in San Francisco — a performance that would birth not only The Allman Betts Family Revival tradition\, but also The Allman Betts Band itself. “That night would’ve been my father’s 70th birthday\,” Devon recalls\, “so I put together a one-off concert to celebrate his life and his music. Duane joined me for some songs. Our families had been intertwined for years\, and we always knew we might form a band at some point in our lives. That show proved we had the chemistry to do it.” \nThe musical chemistry grew throughout 2018\, while the two songwriters played more than 100 shows across the world. Along the way\, they began writing new songs in hotel rooms and tour bus lounges\, creating their own version of the soulful\, guitar-fueled music they’d grow up loving. Flush with material\, The Allman Betts Band recorded its debut album\, Down to the River\, at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. The guys tracked the record live\, recording to two-inch analog tape without the use of computers or digital editing. Down to the River was released in 2019\, reaching Number 1 on the iTunes Rock Chart and cracking the Top 10 on multiple Billboard charts. \n“We built a fanbase very quickly\,” Devon says. “I think there was a need for our kind of music\, especially for people who loved bands like The Grateful Dead\, the Allman Brothers\, and the Rolling Stones. Those fans were excited to hear a newer band doing music in an old-school vein.” \nTo support the album’s release\, The Allman Betts Band launched a world tour on March\, 2019 — an historic date that marked the 50-year anniversary of The Allman Brothers Band’s first jam session in Jacksonville\, Florida. As the seven-piece band toured the world\, the musical connection between Devon and Duane grew deeper. They wrote new songs during the short breaks between shows. They collaborated on the third-annual Family Revival. They even found time to return to Muscle Shoals Sound Studios with producer Matt Ross-Spang\, with whom they recorded Bless Your Heart over a week’s time. \nWhen a global pandemic threatened to prevent The Allman Betts Band from touring behind Bless Your Heart\, the guys got creative\, playing socially-distanced gigs in cow pastures before launching an extensive drive-in tour. They hit a new stride in 2021\, when they played nearly 120 shows — including multiple performances with the Family Revival\, which they turned into a \ntraveling festival featuring an all-star lineup of guests. Artists like Robert Randolph\, Jimmy Hall\, Donovan Frankenreiter\, and G. Love joined them that year\, and when the Family Revival returned in 2022 for another run of shows\, the guys were joined by Luther Dickinson\, Maggie Rose\, and others. \n“The Family Revival started as a celebration of my father\, but it evolved into a Last Waltz-style reunion of players from our generation\, as well as up-and-coming talent\,” Devon explains. “It’s become a chance for all of us to come together\, play this precious catalog\, and galvanize our own generation of musicians. It’s something my Dad would’ve been proud of. I know that Duane’s dad is proud of it\, too.” \nMeanwhile\, The Allman Betts Band took some time off in 2022 and early 2023. During the hiatus\, Duane recorded and released Wild & Precious Life — his full-length debut as a solo artist — while Devon toured the country with Donavon Frankenreiter\, setting a new world record for playing 50 shows across all 50 states in 49 days. By the summer of 2023\, The Allman Betts Band had returned to the road\, ready to start a new chapter. The group expanded its lineup\, too\, with Allman and Betts now joined by guitarist Johnny Stachela\, bassist Justin Corgan\, keyboardist John Ginty\, percussionist/saxophonist David Gomez\, and drummers John Lum and Alex Orbison. \n“We’re keeping the tradition alive\,” says Duane. “The Allman Betts Band is an original band\, and our albums are the foundation of what we do\, but we’re also happy to include a couple tips-of-the-hat to my dad and Gregg Allman during our sets\, too. They’re part of our influences. They’re part of our history.” \nHistory\, indeed.
