In October of 1949, Stuart Powell opened a used car lot and service garage in his hometown of Perryville, Kentucky, and began selling and servicing automobiles. In 1952, he began working at the Mattingly and Rapier Chevrolet dealership in Danville. That pair also owned a Chevy dealership in Lancaster at this time, and in 1953 they asked Mr. Powell to manage that location, which was across from the old Garrard County Stockyards.
In 1960, Mr. Powell discovered that the Ford franchise in Lancaster had become available. At this point, he had over a decade of experience selling and servicing cars, and since he was born and raised in the automotive industry, he felt it was time to start something new. So on December 1st, 1960, he became the new Ford dealer in Garrard County under the name of Powell Motors.
In the early 1970s, Ford Motor Company was cutting back on dealerships in smaller areas and Lancaster was on their radar. Ford insisted that Mr. Powell open a dealership in Danville. With many customers already in the Boyle County area, he took the move into consideration and in 1973, he opened a Ford dealership in Danville. He maintained the Ford Dealership in Lancaster until 1978. Today, headquartered in Danville, he has a staff of 49 people and many can be directly traced back to his original crew from Lancaster and Garrard County.
In 1982, Mr. Powell had a brand new building constructed at his dealership’s current home on the South Danville By-Pass, and in 2002 added 12,000 square feet to allow room to relocate the Mazda franchise and expand the parts & service departments to accommodate increased customer growth.
His daughter, Patti, joined him in the business in 1989 and now serves as dealer principal – continuing the long tradition of giving back, not only to our community, but also to at least seven Kentucky counties through academic and agricultural scholarships, sponsorships, and charitable donations. The dealership has also facilitated the raising of over $146,000 for schools and charities through Ford & Lincoln test-drive fundraisers.
In addition to new and used vehicles, Stuart Powell Ford Lincoln Mazda has a service department that includes a Quick Lane, offering basic maintenance on ALL auto brands – including the best prices on name-brand tires. Further, our service department includes one of Kentucky’s most experienced group of Diesel service technicians. Our Collision Center provides body repair by an experienced staff for all makes and models.
