DANVILLE, Ky. — With crazy crooning cats, singing social sensations, and a prodigious pianist playing to paintings, February is sure to impress at Centre College’s Norton Center for the Arts.
Guaranteed to give a purr-fectly magical performance, the record-breaking musical spectacular CATS hits the Newlin Hall stage on February 27.
Winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, CATS tells the story of one magical night when an extraordinary tribe of cats gathers for its annual ball to rejoice and decide which cat will be reborn.
“The national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit, CATS is out of this world,” said Norton Center Executive Director Steve Hoffman. “The cats portrayed on stage pull from the quirky and unpredictable antics and behaviors of their real-life four-legged counterparts. Whether you’ve seen the show years ago or for the first time, this is a blockbuster and timeless musical.”
Sing along with one of the most treasured songs in musical theatre, “Memory,” and enjoy the all-new sound design, direction and choreography of “a new CATS for a new generation.”
Viral sensation Voctave is bringing a modern take to classic songs, with Broadway show tunes and Disney medleys sung in fresh a cappella vocal arrangements.
“The smooth blending of the Voctave singers’ voices can be deceptively thought of as simple, yet their harmonizing is acutely tight and pristine,” said Hoffman. “The selection of songs for the performance are memorable, lovable and recognizable; fun for all ages!”
Celebrated for their high-energy performances, Voctave will take to the Newlin Hall stage on February 17.
Experience music and visual art intertwined before your eyes with pianist Dominic Cheli’s “The Sound of Paintings,” coming to Weisiger Theatre on February 24.
“The evening’s program features dynamic works by Rachmaninoff, Debussy, and Mussorgsky’s beloved, ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’,” said Hoffman. “As the program title suggests, these music compositions were influenced and inspired by paintings, so we get the chance to see what the composers saw when creating these works.”
Cheli gives the audience an opportunity to experience the world of art in a multi-dimensional way, by playing classic compositions while also featuring a display of paintings by artists such as van Gogh, Watteau, Böcklin and Hartmann.
